We like to float baits down slowly, hide the hooks and hopefully get the bite! 40lb will get you a good fish providing the structure is not too intense. We will go to 50 – 60lb overheads for bigger fish as well as 80lb gear for big reds - overheads on Venoms! Usually, we will take a couple of trolling rods also just in case we come acrossan action.y I’m running through some figures in my head. I’m guessing a 2-3 day trip comes in over a grand once your baited, fueled and fed? Expensive game for big rewards? Yeah $1000 plus per trip and boat wise, you could go for a smaller boat but then you start to lose fuel A dashboard of champions capacity and capability. It is an extensive investment. - the electronic set-up that It’s well documented that you have put plenty of gets it done for Greg. time into finding boat wrecks in Moreton Bay, have you got a running tally? It’s endless, I do like to put cameras down to see what’s there when I find them. I have no doubt that some of these have been purposely put down, but plenty of them are pretty old, possibly 80 -100 plus years. Side scan will help you to find them. Often – I will spend 8 – 10 hours looking for them, and it’s a bit of an addiction. I don’t like to fish them a lot because as soon as you fish a spot, someone comes over so I generally just like to stick a camera on them and see what’s there. We have great nannygai, and red footage in the bay and I’d prefer to do that than pull those fish off the spots. Do the wrecks come and go, get covered up? No, generally the cod will keep them uncovered. I have some really cool footage of 5 metre-ish boats that are sitting in huge holes, and that’s from the cod constantly shifting away the sand trying to keep it un- covered and slowly digging the boat into the sea floor – like a bowl. So I try to teach people, if you take that cod away, that will end with the wreck being sanded over and disappearing. A lot of the big cod, you want to let go, obviously take a feed but if you start taking them away, the wrecks can get sanded over. Finally – what lengths have people gone to get your GPS marks (i.e., the helicopter incident)? The most over the top rumour I’ve been told was that a very wealthy guy follows me around in a heli- copter to ping all my spots when I head out fishing. Not sure what’s more concerning, the person who made up that rumour or the one that believes it. The most common lengths people go to is generally ping- ing you while you’re fishing your marks. I’ve mostly had this at night off Fraser Island and DI, but it hap- pens regularly in other popular areas during the day. Some people make it obvious what they’re doing, i.e., coming up to you with their lights off or a big change in direction towards you when they see you. It’s a massive pet hate of mine as the amount of time and money that goes into searching for ground is huge and for someone to be rewarded with these spots for simply pinging others is a low act. My biggest issue with this is that people often don’t realise how frag- ile spots can be to over-fishing.
