FISH & BOAT, February 2019- P15 Fishing From previous page It was definitely a cool circumstance to catch fish! When the electric dies, the enthusiasm doesn’t! The fish moved on and so did we, and continued our A quick troll produced this nugget off a submerged tree. game plan. While prospecting again, we plucked off a few 70odd cm models from random trees and slogged it out pretty hard until we got to another likely spot. We had a tree, and this time the fish were sitting out to the side of it on the bottom. The tree looked so good they should have been in it. They were hard on the bottom and not moving, and amongst the rubble, you could easily think it was just debris. I felt the lure hit the tree and dropped the rod back to let the lure get over the snag and then wham! We spot locked and peppered the hell out of it, threw every manner of lure and type of retrieve you could imagine at it. Nothing. Then the electric remote died… We couldn’t , and with the wind blowing us everywhere it was that time of the day I suppose… Crack a beer and drop Jack off to the bank to do a number 2… While waiting for Jack to return, I couldn’t stop thinking about that snag and those fish. We couldn’t fish it properly, and until we hooked one, I was only 80% sure they were fish, and the 20% of not knowing was killing me! Our last resort was a troll run over it before we head- ed home. We started the chunky old 25hp merc and blew smoke all over the joint as we lined up our run over 2 1 the tree. We putted over it....working the lure as we for went. I felt the lure hit the tree and dropped the rod back to let the lure get over the snag and then wham! I felt the hit, and immediately twisted the tiller on route to some clearer water. In true barra fashion it jumped and cleared the snag for me, and I had the easy job of winding it in now. The Jackall Squirrel was doing the damage again! A nice little 85cm to finish off the day! The plan for the day worked, and it goes to show, stick with your gut instinct.
