LOOK DEEP INTO NATURE AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND We’ve just rounded out our carbon audit for the 2019 year and I am looking forward to sharing our results with you soon. In the meantime, I thought it might be opportune to discuss a question I am asked often when people come to know we measure our carbon footprint and are a carbon neutral business. Do you realise volcanoes emit way more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than humans? The ensuing conversation often turns into one of those hmmm-aha discussions. I think what people are trying to say when they ask this question is that in comparative terms volcanoes appear to emit a lot more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than the human contribution ever will. Hence, why bother trying to do something to reduce carbon emissions, as it won’t make a difference? Interestingly, there was a time when this fact was true. Volcanoes did emit more carbon on average than humans until around 1875. We slowly crept up with our emissions during the industrial revolution until around the 1960s when emissions from human activity really sky-rocketed. It was then that emerging economies had really started pumping along with the existing Western economies. 08 www.tahbilk.com.au@tahbilkwinery@tahbilkwinery@tahbilkwineryjohnpurbrick@tahbilk.com.au
