Back to Newington Day back with a bang! Cancelled in 2020 and 2021, we were thrilled the 2022 edition of Back to Newington Day (BTND) was a roaring success. BTND is the College’s biggest event of the year, at which we welcome past and current College community members along with the wider community to join us at our Stanmore campus. This year, there were Australian rules football (the first official fixture of the sport played at the Stanmore campus), fencing, football, rugby, tennis and volleyball matches, a marketplace, food and drink stalls, theatresports demonstrations, the Future Ready exhibition at Concordia Gallery, live music, a smoking ceremony, farm animals, a Mothers of Old Newingtonians (MoONs) lunch, a splash park and of course, Willie the Wyvern. Deputy Headmaster Andy Quinane paid tribute to the students, who were exemplary on the day. ‘It was fantastic to see such a vibrant community spirit throughout the day. There was a collective sigh of relief at the magnificent weather as well as the opportunity to come together for the first time in three years. A special shout out to our students who were good hosts, played each game in the right spirit and cheered with respect and good humour throughout the day. Also, great to see Willie the Wyvern out of hibernation after a long slumber.’ Headmaster Michael Parker was relieved the much-loved event went ahead: ‘It was brilliant to have the whole community – parents, boys, grandparents and Old Boys – all enjoying the school together after three years. It felt like a clarion call saying, “we’re all back!”. The games were held in excellent spirit and both the stalls and the showcases were buzzing.’
