Fencers represent College with gusto at national championships Newington College fencers did the school proud at the Australian Senior Schools Championships. We had teams compete in the two tournaments that make up the event – the Intermediate Schools Championship in Canberra in June and the Senior Schools Championship in Alexandria in July. The Intermediate Epee and Intermediate Sabre teams won silver medals in Canberra and the Senior Epee and Senior Sabre teams won silver and bronze medals respectively in Alexandria. Director of Fencing Ms Annie Cao was proud of the boys’ efforts. ‘The boys fenced brilliantly this season,’ she said. ‘It was great to see so many of them qualify for Nationals both in the Intermediate and Senior categories, and across all three weapons as well. ‘The Newington boys really embraced the opportunity and left everything on the piste. When they won, they did so with humility and when they lost, they did so with grace, style and sportsmanship.’ Newington fencers preparing for competition in May.
