Year 11 Roundtable: exploring career possibilities On Tuesday 13 September, the ONU and Careers Centre partnered for its first ‘Year 11 Round Table’ event. Old Newingtonians graduating from 2006 to 2012 were welcomed back to campus for what was a very special day. Old Newingtonians shared their career expertise, advising Year 11 students on the importance of subject selections, life after school and the different opportunities that await them. Current Newington students expressed their gratitude and were entertained with recounts of life journeys. What struck them was that often pathways are not always linear. Some Old Newingtonians had commenced their studies and careers in one industry but then had made a shift into something new or different. Some of the important messages of the day were understanding the significance of critical thinking, identifying new opportunities, maintaining and expanding a network as well as open mindedness. Thank you to Mr Terence Priester, Head of Careers, as well as the ONU for facilitating the event. Special thanks to the following Old Newingtonians who volunteered their time to provide advice and guidance to Year 11 students as they proceed to their final year at the College. • Sean Crook (ON 2006) • Stuart Naylor (ON 2006) • Calvin Park (ON 2007) • Michael Osmond (ON 2007) • Nick Bruce (ON 2007) • Phillip Joseph (ON 2007) • Matthew Ding (ON 2008) • Paul Gyurasits (ON 2008) • Theo Triant (ON 2008) • Thomas Patterson (ON 2009) • Fred Cho (ON 2010) • Matt Anthis (ON 2010) • Geordie Williams (ON 2011) • Saman Iravani (ON 2011) • Frederico Fraga-Matos (ON 2011) • Jack Scott (ON 2012) • Timothy Rosenstrauss (ON 2012) If you would like to volunteer your time for future events, please contact alumni@newington.nsw.edu.au 60 | Service |News Spring 2022
