Despite a 44 to 16 loss to the newest team in the NRL competition, the Dolphins, the evening was a success with 11,296 people heading to TIO Stadium Darwin to see the clash. The game was broadcast nationally, providing an opportunity to showcase footy in the NT while highlighting the diverse cultural activities unique to the Territory. The team also spends time with the community each year. This year the team met fans at a player signing, which the Dolphins also got involved in, the Captain’s Run, and visited resident of Yirrkala, East Arnhem Land. Independent research found the Eels v Dolphins clash generated a total expenditure stimulus of $5.29 million, of which $5.06 million was in Darwin. The total expenditure stimulus figure was an increase of $0.48 million from last year’s Eels v Broncos game due in part to an increase in length of stay. The game was responsible for generating 12,688 visitor nights in the NT with 11,904 nights being in Darwin. The Eels have been playing a match in Darwin since 2014 as part of a partnership between the club and the Northern Territory Government. The match is delivered by NT Major Events on behalf of the Government. For over a decade our Club has built some great connections and relationships in the Northern Territory. It’s a wonderful experience taking rugby league to Darwin every year in front of sell-out crowds, and a privilege for our players and the wider Club to get involved in the community and provide opportunities for local sports fans to learn skills from professional athletes.
