Chairman’s Report It has been a highly rewarding year of growth, innovation, collaboration, development, and impact for events in the Northern Territory. Northern Territory Major Events Company remained committed to its mission to make the Territory a better place through the events it has delivered, funded, and acquired over the past 12 months. This year, the focus has been on impact, leading to a broader narrative around the benefits associated to each event. Through this process, Northern Territory Major Events Company has delivered a number of meaningful outcomes that made a positive impact on the Territory economy, youth, Aboriginal people, sport, arts, remote and regional communities and visitors to the Territory. Creating and curating unique opportunities for visitors and Territorians to connect and share memorable moments during events in the Territory, while also making it a better place to visit and live, has been—and will continue to be—a central focus of the company’s work. Northern Territory Major Events Company’s strategic plan was reviewed and updated into a refreshed 3-year plan. This development followed the Board’s Strategic direction from September 2023, a management review of the internal and external environment and a series of bottom-up workshop activities. The plan is built around three key pillars: Maximise Impact, Celebrate the Territory, and Uplift the Territory’s Capability. These pillars are designed to enhance the Company’s reputation in acquiring, supporting, and delivering some of the country’s most unique and iconic events. A number of new initiatives and offerings were introduced to the Company’s delivered major events, enhancing the overall event goer experience and engagement. The organisation evolved the Event Funding Program (EFP) to better serve and support the local community events sector and attract new ones to the Territory. They streamlined applications and simplified it to three categories - Aboriginal Cultural Events, Cultural Events, and Sporting Events. In last year’s annual report, Northern Territory Major Events Company signalled its intent to grow the business in the event development and acquisition space. To achieve this, the company evolved its strategy and enhanced its acquisition capabilities by strengthening its workforce in this area, with the goal of securing and attracting more top-tier events to position the Territory as a world-class destination. To this end, the Company secured the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme Motocross World Championship (MXGP) – not just for Darwin but also for Australia. The MXGP is an incredibly popular and high-profile major sporting event and to be able to host it here in the Territory is a real coup. Landing this event exclusively for five years, starting in September 2025, marks the end of its 25-year absence from Australia. The MXGP is an exclusive opportunity to display the Territory to an international audience, with a viewership of 727 million across 180 countries. It will attract both domestic and international visitors while supporting the priorities of the NT’s Tourism Industry Strategy 2030. Northern Territory Major Events Company also made progress in the case for a Territory based NBL team with the introduction of a working group focused on supporting a pathway to deliver on this significant opportunity for the Territory. 8
