Marlborough District Council Roading Assets - Activity Management Plan 2015 - 2018 SECTION 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1.6.7 Footpaths 1.6.7.1 Physical Description Footpaths provide a safe, convenient and defined means for pedestrian movements alongside and linking roadways. The footpaths considered under this Section do not include combined use (pedestrians and cycles) or cycle paths. Most urban streets have at least a footpath on one side. Where pedestrian traffic volumes are high a footpath on both sides is provided, if pedestrian volumes are very low no footpath is provided. Rural roads seldom have formal footpaths. Marlborough District Council currently owns and maintains 234.0km of footpaths, the following table breakdowns the footpath types: Type of Surfacing Length (km) Asphaltic Concrete 73.5 Paver 4.6 Concrete 146.3 Seal 7.4 Other 2.1 Total 234.0 Table 6.7.1a: Footpath Types Figure 6.7.1a: MDC Footpaths by Type A full schedule of footpaths is held in the RAMM database. 1.6.7.2 Age and Current Condition A full RAMM condition rating survey of Council footpaths was last undertaken in 2010/ 2011. This survey rated the footpaths from 1 (excellent) to 5 (very poor) by section. The current average condition of footpaths, as detailed in figure 6.7.2b, shows that 94% of the existing footpaths are of average condition or better. The survey was scheduled to be undertaken again in 2013/14 but this was deferred because of the installation of the Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB) fibre network. The installation work is programmed for completion toward the end of 2014, it is proposed to undertaken a footpath rating survey in 2015. The following are the results of the 2010/2011 footpath survey. It is considered that the current condition is significantly better as the renewals programme over the last 3 yrs has targeted the very poor and poor condition footpaths. 30 September 2014 Page 92 of Section 1
